Castel Sant´Angelo as seen from a bridge crossing the Tevere (Tiber) River. We walked this route after going to the Vatican which is nearby. For hundreds of years the Castel Sant´Angelo guarded the Vatican. It was actually built as a tomb for the emperor Hadrian in AD 135. In the 6th century it was transformed into a fortress and was a refuge for the popes for nearly 1,000 years.
