The Ponte Vecchio (Old Bridge). There have been stores on the Ponte Vecchio since the 13th century: initially of all types, butchers, fishmongers, tanners, whose waste caused quite a stench. In 1593 Ferdinand I decreed that only goldsmiths and jewelers be allowed to have stores on the bridge. This shot was taken toward the end of the day when the stores were closing - they lowered wooden doors over the store fronts at night. |
