Löwendenkmal (Lion Monument). This monument is for the 760 guards who died defending Louis XVI of France at the Tuileries in Paris in 1792. It was described by Mark Twain as "the most mournful and moving piece of stone in the world." The Latin inscription above in reads "Helvetiorum Fidei ac Virtuti" ("To the bravery and fidelity of the Swiss").
